Ryan has spent his entire career as a trial lawyer. His passion for trial work began at Notre Dame Law School. As a member of the Notre Dame trial competition team, Ryan won the national championship at the National Trial Competition in Dallas, Texas. He was awarded the Lewis Powell Medal for outstanding trial skills, and the Arthur May Award for excellence and ethics in trial advocacy. He also won the Edward Barrett award in 2001, which is given to the most outstanding trial advocacy student at Notre Dame.
After graduating in 2001, Ryan began his career as a criminal defense attorney. Ryan has defended all types of criminal cases, including violent crimes, major drug felonies, and felony DUI charges. In addition to his trial work, Ryan has successfully handled a number of criminal appeals. He argued successfully before the Indiana Court of Appeals and Indiana Supreme Court, and even petitioned the United States Supreme Court on behalf of one of his criminal defense clients.
After five years of defense work, Ryan joined the Indianapolis Prosecutor's Office as a Major Felony Deputy Prosecutor. In his years with the Prosecutor's Office, Ryan gained a tremendous amount of trial experience. He successfully handled a number of trials for charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, armed robbery, and burglary. His work with the Prosecutor's Office taught him a great deal about how to prosecute a case, and more important, gave him insight on how to be a more effective criminal defense attorney.
In April 2008, Ryan and his family moved to Tucson, where Ryan joined the Udall Law Firm. He focuses on criminal defense work, and handles a wide range of misdemeanors and felonies. Ryan accepts cases ranging from misdemeanor DUIs and simple drug possessions to major drug offenses and violent crimes. He also handles criminal appeals at every level.
In addition to his work as a defense attorney, Ryan is also an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona College of Law. Ryan teaches Trial Advocacy, helping law students become better trial attorneys. He is also head coach of the Law School's Trial Competition Team, and helps those students learn advanced trial skills.
Ryan is a member of the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice (AACJ) and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). No matter what type of criminal case, large or small, Ryan is ready to help you.
